Tuesday 30 April 2013

Day 41 Tuesday 50.4.2013

Today's Consumption:
6 squares dark choc
1 portion Roast Chicken
1 cherry bakewell
2 scoops ice cream
1 can condensed tomato soup
5 slices buttered wholemeal bread
Quarterpound burger+beans+egg
2 choc biscuits

An increased appetite today may be due to spending an afternoon in the garden. I didn't feel excessively ravenous or bloated at any time, just comfortable.

Monday 29 April 2013

Day 40: Monday 29.4.2013

Today's Consumption:
6 squares Dark Choc
2 slices Buttered toast
2 slices buttered toast with jam
1 handful peanuts
1 packet crisps
1 small roast chicken leg
meat pie+mash+peas
1 slice Angel Cake

A day not as "well-behaved" as I had intended after being somewhat surprised by a client out-of-the-blue whom I also gave a light lunch to. After the session I got serious munchies then three hours later had supper.

I went to bed for the first time a little uncomfortably full up since Day 1.

Sunday 28 April 2013

Day 39 Sunday 28.4.2013

Today's Consumption
6 squares dark choc
2 slices buttered toast
2 Cherry Bakewells
1 can beer
Quarterpound burger + chips + egg
2 Fondant Fancies
2 buttered crumpets

A reasonably typical Sunday's consumption. What has become clear is that the circumstances surrounding consumption have a clear impact on it. There is also a "collective vibe" - everyone in the family put on weight in the past couple of weeks, albeit for completely different reasons.

A Monday that promises to be uneventful is a good opportunity for a "re-set". I am now convinced that if I were to offer this therapy to others, I would modify it to take a client's individual circimstances into account.

Friday 26 April 2013

Day 37 Friday 26.4.2013

Today's Consumption:
6 squares dark choc
2 rashers Bacon+ Beans +2 slices buttered bread + choc biscuit
1 Feasters Quarterpounder
3 choc biscuits
1 slice Angel Cake
2 handfuls peanuts

A day notable for being particularly ravenous at 2pm when I normally have lunch due to work pattern, hence the extra choc biscuit. I then felt very full for around 3 hours before the third choc biscuit.

I was only very mildly peckish when I ate the Angel Cake, but a nibble of peanuts an hour later was most more-ish!

I am inclined to make this study more scientific and cross-match activity, hunger-scale and consumption, so I will include more data from tomorrow.

Thursday 25 April 2013

Day 36 Thursday 25.4.2013

Today's Consumption:
6 squares dark choc
2 rashers bacon + beans + egg + 2 slices buttered bread+ 1 scoop ice cream
A couple of mouthfuls of roast chicken + 1 small buttered end of crusty breadGarlic chicken + Dauphinoise potatoes + petits pois + toffee sundae

I'm not sure where the serious munchies came from in the morning but the hefty breakfast certainly kept me going until lunchtime, which was really only just cast-offs from Son's lunch. Supper was standard for Thursday and kept me satisfied until bedtime.

Wednesday 24 April 2013

Day 35 Wednesday 24.4.2013 5th Weigh-In

15st 1lbs (211lbs): loss this week = -1lbs, Overall = 6lbs

Oh dear - 1lb gained! That in itself is not a disaster - even on standard diets successful dieters put on the odd pound in the odd week. What's of more concern is that we are now in week 8 and after a great start I've gone nowhere.

However it's still too early to write off the experiment as a failure. We've had an exceptionally cold early Spring, I've had the disruption of a long Easter break with the family at home, new cats, Missus surgery and a general loss of discipline in my life in general over the past week.

We can conclude however that the therapy isn't so fabulous as to be immune to distractions. If I was to ultimately offer the therapy myself, it would be with modifications to take this into account. On the plus side I've definitely felt more comfortable and there's been a distinct absesnce of bloating and heartburn, so there has been side-benefits.

I'll make something of a fresh start on Thursday, generally getting back to discipline in the other areas of my life, and see how we go.

Tuesday 23 April 2013

Day 34 Tuesday 23.4.2013

Today's Consumption
Single Beans-on-toast + 1 slice buttered bread
1 cherry bakewell
4 choc biscuits
1 packet crisps
Meat pie+mash+gravy
2 slices Angel Cake

My weight wasn't at the forefront of my mind today but that considered, though not a nutrition-guru's recommendation, quantities were reasonable and I never felt bloated at any point.

Monday 22 April 2013

Day 33 Monday 22.4.2013

Today's Consumption
1 bacon sandwich
2 cherry bakewells
2 handfuls peanuts
1 rack pork ribs
4 choc biscuits

..Absolutely NO excuse for the choc biscuits! I think it was subconscious comfort-eating after discovering that Son had accidentally (but harmlessly) left the oven on 2 for hours after cooking.

Sunday 21 April 2013

Day 32 Sunday 21.2.2013

Today's Consumption:
6 squares dark choc
2 slices buttered toast
1 choc biscuit
Quarterpounder + Chips + Egg
3 Fondant Fancies
2 buttered crumpets

I kept to the rules, keeping in the 3-7 range of the Tummy Scale, and unlike previous days did not snack outside meals. I have to say that any weight-loss aside, I am generally much more comfortable and these days I almost never get heartburn.

Saturday 20 April 2013

Day 31 Saturday 20.4.2013

Today's Consumption
2 rashers bacon+beans+2 slices buttered bread
1 Feasters Quarterpounder
1 Twix
1 Milky Way bar
2 slices Angel Cake
1 packet crisps

...I know, too much "band-dodging" junk! Stuff that doesn't bloat me and keeps me snuggly in the 5-6 range of the Tummy Scale and is comforting or celebratory. Over and above the Hypnotic Gastric Band rules, which I'm keeping to, I am beginning to think additional rules are necessary. That said, learning from yesterday, a substantial breakfast kept snacking at bay for a good part of the day.

Friday 19 April 2013

Day 30 Friday 19.4.2013

Today's consumption:
1 bowl porridge
3 handfuls peanuts
1 KitKat chunky bar
1 Feasters Quarterpounder
1 Twix
7 Chocolates (from a box)
2 slices Angel Cake
1 packet crisps
1 scoop ice cream.

Oh dear. After a healthy start, the Tummy Scale plummeted to 2 -3 and pretty much stayed there all day, and caught at the Weekend Job I munched junk food all day right through to bedtime. We'll write today off as a "blip".

Thursday 18 April 2013

Day 29 Thursday 18.4.2013

Today's Consumption:
1 bacon sandwich
2 hunks buttered crusty bread
Chicken breast+Daupinoise Potatoes+Peas
1 twinpot Toffee Sundae
1 choc biscuit
1 mouthful Roast Chicken

In case you were wondering about the Roast Chicken, I used to buy a pre-cooked chicken from ASDA that myself and Son eat throughout the week, but ASDA stopped selling them, so now I buy a raw one and cook it myself. For various reasons, I didn't get round to cooking it until the later evening this week, and the smell and taste were irresistable! I did however limit myself to a mouthful.

Wednesday 17 April 2013

Day 28 Wednesday 17.4.2013 4th Weigh-In

15st 0lbs (210lbs): loss this week = 0lbs, Overall = 7lbs

Oh dear, no change! On the positive side, at least I have not gone backwards. It must also be taken into account that it's been a very atypical week, so it's not time to write off the experiment. With things more like normality coming up in the next week, it will be a fairer test.

Today's consumption:
6 squares dark choc
1 rack pork ribs
2 slices buttered bread
2 scoops ice cream
1 can of beer
1 portion roast chicken
2 choc biscuits

A day in which I just didn't get round to breakfast and the Tummy Scale plummeted to 1 by lunch. The Scale then barely got to 6 all day, but it's better than feeling overfull.

Tuesday 16 April 2013

Day 27 Tuesday 16.4.2013

Today's Consumption:
6 squares dark choc
Bacon+egg+beans+2 slices buttered bread
3 slices angel cake
1 packet crisps
2 slices buttered toast with 1.5 mini-cans toast topping
1 Penguin bar

...The toast-topper was a mistake! I spread it on too thickly and though not bloated it felt "unnecessary". I will put this down to experience!

Monday 15 April 2013

Day 26: Monday 16.4.2013

Today's Consumption:
6 squares dark choc
1 bacon sandwich
1 cherry bakewell
2 slices buttered toast
steak pie + mash + peas + gravy
2 slices angel cake

A particularly filling (but not bloating) supper kept hunger thoroughly locked up into the following day!

Sunday 14 April 2013

Day 25: Sunday 14.4.2013

Today's Consumption:
6 Squares Dark Choc
2 Slices Buttered Toast
Quarterpounder+Chips+Egg
3 Fondant Fancies
2 scoops ice cream
1 packet crisps

The evening was notable for an argument between myself regarding joining missus in crumpets. I really fancied the idea but my stomach was emphatic that it didn't want any. In previous occasions, the pro-crumpet lobby would have won, but I'm now so in tune with my stomach that its feelings took priority.

A compromise was reached where fairly late on, "band-dodging" crisps and ice cream were enjoyed.

Saturday 13 April 2013

Day 24: Saturday 13.4.2013

Today's Consumption:
6 Squares Dark Choc
1 Bacon Sandwich
2 Penguin bars
1 Feasters Quarterpounder
1 Fruit Yogurt
2 Slices Angel Cake
1 packet crisps

A fairly average sort of consumption, evenly spread over the day so I never got either bloated or ravenous.

Friday 12 April 2013

Day 23: Friday 12.4.2013

Today's Consumption:
6 squares dark choc
1 roast chicken sandwich
1 cherry bakewell
2 Penguin bars
1 Feasters Quarterpounder
2 handfuls peanuts
1 choc biscuit
2 slices Angel Cake

It's very rare I get late night munchies, but I got seriously munchy just before bedtime for some odd reason! That's why the peanuts and biscuits are there! I still kept to the rules though, and at no point in the day felt bloated - the consumption is evenly spread from waking to sleeping.

Thursday 11 April 2013

Day 22 Thursday 12.4.2013

Today's Consumption:
6 squares dark choc
1 hunk crusty white bread
steak+chips+peas+2 slices bread
1 toffee sundae
1 Penguin bar

Still full after last night's very late supper, I felt like I woke having already eaten breakfast! I think the steak meal in the evening was the first time I didn't eat consciously, which is one of the "Golden Rules", but that said, the Tummy Scale didn't go above 7 and I was comfortable for the rest of the evening.

Wednesday 10 April 2013

Day 21 Wednesday 11.4.2013 Third Weigh-In

15st 0lbs (210lbs): loss this week = 2lbs, Overall = 7lbs

Not bad - quite happy with that, especially since I'm not "dieting" per se.

Today's Consumption:
1 Bacon Sandwich
2 packets crisps, 1 Twix
Chicken+Beans+2 slices buttered beread
1 Cherry Bakewell
2 Choc Biscuits

It was the first day the Tummy Scale plummeted to 1 but it was a highly unusual day as I spent most of it in hospital whilst missus had minor surgery. I had a reasonable breakfast but just junk for lunch and by the time I got home was famished. I went to bed on unusually full stomach.

I normally avoid full stomachs before bed as they cause insomnia, but this night I slept like a baby! However, the Tummy Scale was still at 7 when I woke, so last night's very late supper counts as the following morning's breakfast!

Tuesday 9 April 2013

Day 20: Tuesday 9.4.2013

Today's Consumption:
6 squares dark choc
3 Weetabix+milk+Golden Syrup
1 rack pork ribs
Burger+Baked Beans+1 slice buttered bread
3 Cherry Bakewells

A day where consumption was determined by "social eating". The Ribs were meant to be eaten with Son, but with "Lad's Time" cancelled, I ate them to use them up. The evening meal is one of Missus' favourites and her last before her surgery, so I joined her in it.

An an unusual day in that I ate to please others, and not one that will define the overall success of the experiment. Nevertheless the Tummy Scale kept in range.

Monday 8 April 2013

Day 19 Monday 8.4.2013

Today's Consumption:
6 squares dark choc
2 slices buttered toast
1 quarter roast chicken - neat
steak pie +mash+peas+gravy
3 slices angel cake
2 choc biscuits

It would seem that a 2-hour ironing marathon worked up a ravenous appetite!
The suggestion of my stomach being a "tennis ball" is not proving viable but it does nevertheless feel smaller - I'd say from a 2-litre capacity down to around 1. I can certainly say that since the experiment started, I've never once felt "bloated" (factor "8" on the tummy scale) .

Sunday 7 April 2013

Day 18 Sunday 7.4.2013

Today's Consumption:
4 squares Dark Choc
6 squares White Choc
2 slices buttered toast
Quarterpounder+fried egg+chips
2 Fondant Fancies
1 Buttered Crumpet
2 handfuls peanuts

This feels quite a lot in hindsight, most of it "band-dodging" stuff that slips down easily. Nevertheless, I kept to the rules - there are no restrictions to what I eat when, only that I focus on the tummy scale and respond accordingly. Sundays are inevitably going to be "easier-going", but next weigh-in will show if I "got away with it".

Saturday 6 April 2013

Day 17 Saturday 6.4.2013

Today's Consumption:
6 squares dark choc
1 Feasters Quarterpound Cheeseburger
1 Cherry Bakewell
2 slices Angel Cake
1 handful peanuts
1 packet crisps

A Feasters Quarterpounder might not be the healthiest food, but eat it properly and it keeps you going all day! The tummy scale did not drop below 6 until afternoon break, and after the burger, it went back up to 6 for another 5 hours or so. Evening munchies arrived very late, and when it did I felt I could "afford" it!

Friday 5 April 2013

Day 16 Friday 5.4.2013

Today's consumption:
6 squares dark choc
2 slices buttered wholemeal toast
1 Feaster's 1/4 cheeseburger
2 slices Angel Cake
1 handful of peanuts

An interesting and notable change has happened when I get hungry. Previously I used to get very tetchy indeed, but today my mood was considerably laid back. I was feeling it but not overly bothered by it. When I did get the chance to eat, I didn't fancy a sweet follow up, even though I had brought one.

This regime seems to work by eliminating the extremes - I no longer get extremely hungry nor extremely stuffed. Because I'm never starving, the new behaviour is starting to become a habit that hopefully I can permanently keep going.

Thursday 4 April 2013

Day 15: Thursday 4.4.2013

Today's consumption:
9 squares dark choc
Garlic mushroom chicken + Dauphinoise Potatoes+ Peas+ 1 hunk buttered bread
1 can condensed tomato soup + 2 hunks bread + 2 scoops ice cream

I was told at the initial session that my stomach would feel the size of a tennis-ball. Resultant experience is that it feels larger than that - more like a litre container, but that's still smaller than the watermelon it felt like before, and aside from this discrepancy, everything else seems to be working. The idea of massive portions piled onto my plate now seems absolutely revolting.

I used to easily consume a canful of Irish Stew or meatballs in one sitting, but now that just feels too big. My one weakness is band-dodging ice-cream, which you can consume considerable quantities of without feeling full. However so long as I eat it after something else and listen closely to my tummy scale, I can probably get away with a scoop or two.

Wednesday 3 April 2013

Day 14 Wednesday 3.4.2013 2nd Weigh-In

WEIGH-IN: 15st 2lbs (212lbs) - Down 1 lb - 5lb overall

...Considering this weigh-in was at the end of a week of Easter chocolate bonanza and an excuse or two for comfort eating, this is a good result - I was half-expecting to go backwards!

Today's consumption:
6 Squares Dark Choc
2 slices buttered toast
Single beans on toast + 1 extra untoasted slice of bread
3 slices Angel Cake
1 choc biscuit
1 rack pork ribs
3/4 pint of beer

A reasonable day's consumption although it was marked by absolutely zip exercise. Everybody in the family was at home all day chilling out. However that is unusual to have moved so little, and it makes for a fair test of the method.

Tuesday 2 April 2013

Day 13 Tuesday 2.4.2013

6 squares dark choc
2 slices buttered toast
Corned beef hash, 2 slices Angel Cake
4 chocolate biscuits

After an orgy of "band-dodging" chocolate over Easter, things began to settle back down again today. Not only has the milk chocolate run out, but my mind is beginning to recover from an upseting experience the previous week, allowing clearer focus.

After dark choc as usual first thing, and 2 slices toast mid-morning, the tummy scale stayed obstinately at 6-7 right through to the early afternoon. A craving for chocolate biscuits hit me around the later afternoon, which emerged again in the later evening. On both occasions the tummy scale itself was at 5, so this was bending one of the Golden Rules - only eating when the tummy scale hits 4.

We shall be discovering the impact of this unsettled week at the Wednesday Weigh-In!

Let's talk about poo
On this regime, one of two things are required to "get things moving" - either sheer quantity or enough fibre. Baked beans I've found are excellent for this, but toast, even wholemeal toast, isn't on its own.

There were an unusal two toilet visits today - the morning one was a fine reasonable-size log. The evening visit was another matter - basically a batch of hard brown stones that required "assistance".

When you are not eating more than you need, the digestive system goes into max efficiency, and every last drop of nutrition - and water - is extracted. Fibre soaks up and retains more water, effectively bulking up and lubricating your logs.

That said, I'm still happy to let my intuition decide what it wants. The whole point of the experiment is not to be on a diet but to eat in a different way - not "what" but "how" - and to see if that works.

Monday 1 April 2013

Day 12 Easter Monday 1.4.2013

6 squares dark choc
2 rashers bacon, baked beans + 2 slices buttered wholemeal bread
I can't remember lunch!
Steak Pie + mash + peas, 1 cherry bakewell
About 400g Easter Egg chocolate

It was another day where what seemed like quite a lot of consumption at the time doesn't look so bad on paper. It was in any case the third/fourth indulgent day of Easter, but throughout I've never felt bloated or exceeded 7 on the tummy scale.

I do expect consumption to be more controlled from this point as the chocolate runs out! There's no guilt though as after all I'm not "dieting", simply eating in a new permanently different way. Easter is after all a festival. In the long term, festivals will have no lasting impact on my weight, it's the ordinary days that will determine success.
